6 Apr 2008 - Waveney U13s V Copleston U13’s – Match report – Sunday 6th April 2008
The Cops played the league champions for the final time this season with a team short of a few players. Molly had to come out of retirement to make the numbers up to the bare minimum to play the Real Madrid of girl’s football.
Snow was forecast and the teams lined up for the kick off. Waveney started well and the Cops were forced into long periods of defence. Ashleigh was performing heroics in goal and the defence of Molly, Bridie, Kelly and Becky were staying strong.
The goals inevitably came with Waveney piling on the pressure. They put in five goals before half time but the cops had played well and with no substitutes were working their socks off.
Half time – Waveney 5 Copleston 0
Becky went between the posts for the second half with Ashleigh moving up front. Mema, Rachael and Jazzy were putting the work in with some great tackling. It took a while for Waveney to add to their tally with goals number six and seven. Despite the scoreline it was a great performance by the sky blues with some resolute defending. The Cops came into the game more and more and chances were beginning to come.
Jess scored a great goal from the edge of the area to make it 7-1. This was only the fifth goal Waveney had conceded all season. Chances also fell to Mema and Ashleigh. The Waveney management team were beginning to get slightly worried and brought on their two star players who started to carve up the tired Copleston team. With the score at 11-1 Waveney needed one more goal to complete a double century of goals for the season. The Copleston defence held firm and the final whistle brought much needed relief to the exhausted Copleston team. Waveney had fallen one short of their target.
The girls did themselves proud today and both Carl and Matt were delighted with the effort and commitment shown. The scoreline doesn’t really do the girls justice as they played some great stuff. They were complimented by the Waveney managers on the performance.
Congratulations to Waveney who are deserved Champions for the second year running. They are head and shoulders above the rest of the league. We are giving them a competitive game now which was not the case in the past.
Now onto the big one against
Final score – Waveney 11 – Copleston 1
