Copleston Under 14’s Season review 2006 – 2007

A challenging year for the U14s saw them finish the season with a very respectable 18

points.  Top goal scorer for a third successive season was Siobhan who tucked away a total of 16 goals in league, cup and friendly matches.  Well done Siobhan.  If Sammy’s form in the end of season tournaments is anything to go by, fourth year running won’t be quite so easily achieved!

The highlight of the season was undoubtedly the girls’ 2-0 away defeat of Woodbridge in the league.  Playing with only seven players, the girls put in the performance of a life time to record a memorable win.  All of the games with the teams finishing in mid table were closely contested and we can all look forward to some exciting matches next season.

We have been fortunate to have been able to welcome a number of new girls to strengthen the squad and look forward to the start of an enjoyable season in the autumn with a settled and good fun group of players.

Rick and Paul have really enjoyed working with the girls this season.

Presentation Night

For Rick and Paul, all the girls in the squad were winners, but Presentation Night does see three girls collect special awards.

Club Person of the Year

The Club Person of the year award this season went to Leah.  Somebody watching the odd game might not notice her contribution.  But Paul and Rick have watched her consistent efforts throughout the season at training and in the matches and her team mates have noticed too.  Well done Leah and keep up the good work.

Manager’s Player of the Year

One of the club’s aims is to encourage the continuous development of both individuals and teams within the club.  Bearing that in mind and on the basis of her hard work, her good humour and the significant improvement in her footballing ability this year, the Manager’s Player of the Year award this year went to Forest .  Well done Forest.

Players’ Player of the Year

It’s a special thing to be recognised by your peers, so Emily was no doubt thrilled to add the Players’ Player of the Year award to last year’s Manager’s Player of the Year award.  Well done Emily.  Your strength and commitment is well known at Copleston – and, come to think of it, by most of the midfield and attacking players in the opposing teams!

End of season tournaments

Gainsborough tournament 20th May

We were so close to a place in the final!  Three keenly fought goal-less draws followed by two fine wins saw us needing just one point against Stow A in our last match to reach the final.  A nail biting game saw us lose a very close contest 1-2.

All of the girls performed really well and should be proud of what they achieved on the day.  Bria kept our spirits high by saving a penalty in the very first match and Sammy and Siobhan’s goal scoring was of the highest quality.  Even Leah got her name on the score sheet with a goal scored from her own half!

It was good to welcome Alysha back after a long absence through injury.  Her play making was of a very high standard.

Amy led by example as usual and Emily was as strong and competitive as ever.

Disappointed though we were at not reaching the final, one narrow defeat in six games was a very strong performance by the squad.

Anglo Dutch Tournament 26th May

We were fortunate to be invited to take part in a second tournament at Gainsborough by John Nunn, manager of Woodbridge .  An exchange visit saw footballers from Schagen in Holland staying in the area and for the first time, a girls’ football team came along to take part in the football matches.  The Dutch manager presented us with a fine trophy at the beginning of our match with them as a memento of the day.

Again, the girls were outstanding and we were pleased to include three of our new girls, Amy B, our other Emily D and Courtney in the squad.  Solid performances in the group stages saw us meet the Dutch girls in the semi final.  The woodwork kept us out on at least two occasions and after extra time, the match went to the dreaded penalty shoot out!

Well done to the girls who stepped up to take them, but sadly for us it was the Dutch team which made it to the final.

The girls really did deserve something from both of the two tournaments but although they came away without medals, their team work and commitment should see them look forward with a good deal of renewed confidence to the new season.

Numbers didn’t permit us to include Jess and Grace, our other new girls in the end of season tournaments, but we have enjoyed having them at training and look forward to their company during the U15 season.
