17 Dec 2007 - Whitton United Girls Under 13’s V Copleston Girls U13 – Match Report

In the final match before Christmas, Copleston took on local rivals Whitton in an eagerly awaited rematch. A full compliment of official linesman and a referee got the game under way with Cops playing with the wind.

The first half was keenly fought with the match going from one end to the other. Ashleigh made a couple of good saves in goals and the defence was looking good. Sarah was disappointed when her goal was quite rightly ruled off for offside. Whitton took the lead with a well taken goal and despite some pressure from the Sky Blues the score remained 1-0 to Whitton at half time.

Sarah took over between the sticks at half time with top goal scorer Ashleigh providing the fire power. Cops were pressing for an equaliser with good efforts from Jess and Bridie. The blues then put together a fine move which resulted in Ashleigh blasting home the equaliser. The crowd went wild. The game could have gone either way with both teams having chances. Unfortunately for Cops it went to Whitton who scored the winner with five minutes to go.

This was perhaps Copleston’s best ever performance and credit to all the girls who took part. Bridie was outstanding and kept Whitton’s star player Molly quiet. But it would be hard to really pick an individual out as every one contributed.

The game was played in good spirit and with a very good display from the match officials. That’s it for 2007, onwards and upwards for 2008. The coaching team would like to wish all the girls and parents a great Christmas and a happy new year.
